The wine is made by Thierry Lesne, a Champenois born-and-bred, who deserted the family tradition and came to winemaking in a roundabout way: he first embarked on a four-year management course before doing his military service in the Gabon.
On the granite hills of the cru villages, it can produce velvety, deeply flavoured reds that age surprisingly well, then at the other extreme, its Nouveau is all young, fresh fruit, made for drinking early.
Since then, he has been making a fabulous range of wines for us at the Valvigneres cellar in the Ardeche, an isolated, craggy region next door to the Rhone..
So he went to Australia and South Africa killing two birds with one stone - acquiring vital winemaking experience and learning English.
This 2006 from the rugged hills of the Ardeche leans towards the style of the former, with its lovely depth of berry flavour.
Returning from his stint in finance overseas, he realised his family was right and wine was the thing to do.
This is a gorgeously quaffable red full of Summer berry charm made using the kingpin grape of Beaujolais.
